This story is absolutely sickening.
Stephen Vincent Chavez admitted to sexually assaulting his own daughter, Makayla Rene Settles, just days after she moved across the country to live with him. He now faces only three years in prison for the crime.
Makayla was 18 when she left North Carolina to be with her biological father in California. Two days after she arrived, Chavez took her to a family gathering where they drank. He then bought more alcohol and brought it home, where he sexually assaulted her.
A few months later, Makayla took her own life.
Chavez pleaded guilty to felony incest and a misdemeanor for providing alcohol to a minor. He admitted he abused a “position of trust” with his daughter.
Three years.
That’s it. The man who destroyed his daughter’s life and contributed to her suicide is looking at just three years behind bars.

This is the kind of soft-on-crime insanity that makes people lose faith in the justice system. California’s courts are supposed to protect victims, especially in cases this horrific. Instead, a father who preyed on his own child gets a slap on the wrist.
Makayla moved across the country hoping to build a relationship with her dad. What she got was betrayal and trauma so severe that she ultimately ended her own life. The pain she endured is unimaginable, and the system’s response feels like it’s adding insult to injury.
President Trump has repeatedly called out the breakdown in law and order under progressive policies. Cases like this show exactly why Americans demanded change. When criminals — especially those who commit the most heinous acts — get light sentences, it sends a clear message that victims don’t matter.
The California justice system is supposed to protect the innocent and punish the guilty. In this case, it failed Makayla and her family in the worst possible way.
Three years for incest that led to a young woman’s suicide is not justice. It’s a disgrace.
The public is rightly outraged, and this case should serve as a wake-up call. Families deserve real protection, not token sentences that let monsters back on the street while their victims are gone forever.
