In a move that has sparked significant controversy, Worcester, Massachusetts, has declared itself a “transgender sanctuary city” following a protracted city council meeting. The session, lasting approximately five hours, saw around 200 attendees, predominantly advocating for the designation.
The council chambers were filled to capacity as numerous residents voiced their support for the initiative, which was spearheaded by local organizations such as Queer Residents of Worcester and Our Allies. The petition urged the city to resist federal and state policies perceived as harmful to transgender and gender-diverse individuals and to ensure non-discriminatory access to healthcare, housing, education, and employment for the LGBTQ+ community.
This development follows the temporary departure of Thu Nguyen, Worcester’s first openly nonbinary councilor-at-large, who cited a transphobic environment as the reason for their hiatus.
The city council approved the sanctuary city status with a 9-2 vote.
Critics argue that such measures may prioritize specific groups over the broader community and could lead to unintended consequences. They express concerns about the potential for increased division and the implications of non-cooperation with federal and state policies.
