Cambridge, Massachusetts — home of Harvard and some of the most out-of-touch progressive thinking in America — just made a decision that defies all common sense.
Last week the city had an active-shooter incident. This week, on Monday night, the Cambridge City Council voted to shut down its ShotSpotter gunshot detection system within the next 90 days.
Police Commissioner Pauline Wells begged the council not to deactivate the devices. She cited multiple recent cases where the technology helped officers respond faster and save lives.

🚨 After the Bullets, Cambridge Turns Off the Alarm
Last night, Cambridge City Council voted to end its use of ShotSpotter, even after Police Commissioner Pauline Wells practically begged them not to shut it off.

Her plea fell on deaf ears.
The push to kill ShotSpotter came from a coalition of liberal activists. Some claimed privacy concerns because the microphones are always listening. Others came from openly anti-policing groups like The Black Response, whose stated goal is to defund and abolish the Cambridge Police Department.
Then there’s the part that really exposes the insanity: activists and a Boston University professor argued that ShotSpotter could indirectly help ICE deport illegal immigrants. If someone gets arrested after a gunshot alert and their fingerprints hit a federal database, ICE might find them. So better to let shooters escape than risk deporting someone who isn’t supposed to be here.

Cambridge residents who actually want safe streets are now stuck with politicians who care more about ideology than public safety. The very tool that helps police locate gunfire faster is being turned off right after a shooting incident.
This is the logical endpoint of years of radical policies that treat police as the enemy and criminals (or illegal immigrants) as victims. And Cambridge just voted to double down on it.
President Trump has been warning about this exact mindset for years. While Democrats push “defund the police,” soft-on-crime policies, and open borders, Trump has always stood for law and order and backing the blue. He knows that when you hamstring police and prioritize illegal immigrants over American citizens, chaos is the only result.
The left loves to lecture everyone about “systemic” problems, but this is the real systemic failure: cities run by people who would rather protect criminals and non-citizens than protect the law-abiding families who live there.
Americans are watching places like Cambridge and remembering exactly why they rejected that vision in 2024. When leaders care more about feelings and optics than keeping people safe, this is what you get.
